Dan is an employee at a regional mid-size computer company?
Dan is an employee at a regional mid-size computer company that has recently been sold to a larger, national computer manufacturing corporation. Dan is in charge of computer production orders, and because of this recent shift in ownership, his department’s day-to-day operations are about to change drastically. Dan has been an employee of the mid-size company for 10 years, and thinks that the current way of doing things in his department does not need any improvement.
If you were Dan’s new supervisor, provide a method for how you would address the issue described above, and justify the effectiveness of your solution. Why would Dan find your solution effective/helpful? Why would your solution be effective/helpful from your perspective as a supervisor?
I would sit down with Dan, man to man, and I’d ask him how things are going and try to get to know him better. Then I’d just right out ask him what he thinks about how to improve the dept. I’d then listen to what he had to say and take it into consideration. Following this, I’d ask him if he’d mind coming to my office so I could show him some facts and figures that may help him understand the situation.
I’d then offer him solid facts, verified figures and charts and demonstrate to him why things need to change and how much more productive things could be if the changes took place.
HOpefully, this would convince Dan to at least think about it. I’d try my best to get him involved in the change process by making him a team leader.
When people understand WHY they usually don’t have a problem changing as long as it makes sense.
If the change plan is utterly ridiculous and Dan’s right…why make the change. Maybe it’s not Dan who’s being stubborn here. Maybe it’s the other entitiy. Listen to Dan’s plan and see how it comes out. If Dan doesn’t have a plan, then he’s simply being stubborn and ridiculous and his opinion is practically worthless but at least give Dan a chance to prove himself or get him to buy into the new plan by offering him solid information and the opportunity to better himself by bettering the company.
